The Schroth Method

The Schroth Method is a Physiotherapy Scoliosis-specific exercise approach. It focuses primarily on the three-dimensional correction of the curve pattern. It is achieved through combinations of stretching, strengthening, and corrective breathing techniques, based on each patient’s unique spinal curve. These exercises are designed to elongate, centralize and de-rotate the spine.

This treatment approach can be used to manage scoliosis and hyperkyphosis in patients of all ages. It can also be utilised in all stages of scoliosis, including those who have undergone surgery for their scoliosis.

The concepts in Schroth Method can also be used to treat other spinal conditions such as low back pain and spinal stenosis, and to improve posture in the general population.

Goals of Schroth Method

  1. Improve overall posture

  2. Improve 3-dimensional trunk shape

  3. Stop curve progression

  4. Correct curve partially

  5. Reduce pain and functional limitations

  6. Improve lung capacity

  7. Improve quality of life

  8. Improve self image

For Scoliosis and Hyperkyphosis

To see success with the Schroth Method for Scoliosis and Hyperkyphosis requires commitment. You will need to go through 10 to 20 sessions of Schroth Therapy at a frequency of 2 to 3 sessions per week in order to sufficiently learn the exercises to be performed at home. These exercises are tailored based on your curve type. Thereafter, followed up reviews are performed once every 3 to 6 months.

In children and adolescents with Scoliosis, bracing may be needed together with the Schroth Method to see results.

For other Spinal Conditions

There is no need to undergo intensive Schroth Therapy for non-scoliosis related conditions. Nonetheless, the principles of Schroth Method will be incorporated in your physiotherapy session for your spinal pain and condition to improve your posture and reduce your pain and functional limitations.

What Can You Expect?

A comprehensive assessment of your spine will be conducted.

  • Detailed history taking of your symptoms and condition.

  • Thorough examination of your spine x-ray.

  • Thorough examination of your posture, movement, strength, mobility, and function.

Upon completion of the above assessment, there will be a detailed explanation of your condition and possible prognosis. An outline of your treatment plan will also be discussed with you.

Finally, the physiotherapy treatment will be administered.

This will include Schroth Method and one or more of the following:

  • Postural and movement correction

  • Breathing re-training

  • Manual therapy such as joint, myofascial, and scar tissue mobilisation

  • Electrical Physical Agents such as ultrasound therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and radial shockwave therapy.

  • Dry needling

You will be given an individualised home exercise program to enhance the recovery or to manage your condition.
